1978/1979 : Feasibility studies carried out by Greater Colombo Economic
Commission to set up a Technician Training Institute to cater to man-power requirements of the Free Trade Zone.
March 1979 : Cabinet approval for setting up a Institute of Engineering
Technology (Former : Technician Training Institute) under NAB.
Request from NAB to UNDP/ILO for assistance to establish IET to develop existing Special Apprenticeship Programs in the country. Initiation of NAB/UNDP/ILO. Project SLR/79/037
Feb. 1981 : Commencement of the Building Construction Project – stage 1.
(Classrooms, Laboratory/Workshop facilities).
June 1983 : First Project agreement NAB/UNDP/ILO
June 1984 : Appointment of National Project Co-ordinator.
Commencement of Project activities.
Sept. 1984 : Appointment of National Consultants. Commencement of the
Building Construction Project Stage II (Auditorium, Library and Administration buildings).
March 1985 : Assignment of International Consultants to IET Project.
Recruitment and Training of Academic staff for IET.
Sept. 1985 : Completion of Building Construction Project Stage 1.
Commencement of the 1st Special Apprenticeship in Engineering Program.
July 1986 : Approval for setting up the Training Monitoring Unit.
Dec. 1987 : Completion of Building Construction Project stage 11.
Termination of UNDP/ILO technical assistance.
Sept. 1989 : Recognition of Special Apprenticeship Engineering Course
for granting of the Certificate of National Diploma in Engineering Sciences.
June 1999 : First syllabi revision after 14 years.
